The Setting

It is the Age of Heroes.

The Eastern Continent, Ilod, in the Common tongue is in a state of anarchy and disarray. There was once a powerful empire ruled by the Strati, a royal family whose bloodline has existed for centuries. The High Stratian Empire existed for 150 years in relative peace. Suddenly 31 years ago, there was a great revolution that swept the Empire. Many cities were destroyed in bloody riots and burned to the ground, and the royal Stratian rulers were deposed. Most of the family was executed, but many escaped into the population.

The years immediately following the civil war were filled with chaos and death. Bands of outlaws and brigands roamed the countryside attacking and pillaging whatever camps and small towns they came across. An amount of order came in the form of the city states that arose from the ruins of the High Cities. The leaders of these refuges were the strongest warriors, sorcerers, and the like that could amass armies and provide protection to their residents.

As the city-states arose and grew in size and number, the chaos of the countryside slowly died away and life in the Remnants of Stratia began anew. The sorcerer-kings as they came to be known became more akin to legends and enigmas as they ran the city-state from their keeps and towers. Caravans began venturing out to find other city-states to trade with and establish communication.

One of the first and largest city-states, Stillwater, sits at the North shore of Moon Bay on the Southern Coast of Ilod. Its society is heavily dependent on trade and the caravans from other neighboring city-states. As of late, many of the trade caravans have been attacked and lost much of their cargo or disappeared altogether.

In recent years, Stillwater has become the stage of politics. Families who had come into favor of the Sorcerer-King began to vie for power and status. Each family began to search for relics and other items of power. The families very rarely go out on relic searches themselves but instead hire lower citizens especially those in need of money due to debts or young adventurers in search of their fortune.
